Description
Technical Overview
The C4V3PH is a precision Zener diode designed for voltage regulation and signal clipping in electronic systems. It is commonly used as a reference voltage for analog circuitry or to protect sensitive digital logic pins from voltage spikes that exceed 4.3V.
Technical Specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
| Nominal Zener Voltage ($V_Z$) | 4.3V |
| Power Dissipation ($P_D$) | 500mW (0.5W) |
| Package Type | DO-35 (Glass Axial Lead) |
| Tolerance | $\pm 5\%$ |
| Operating Temperature | -65°C to +200°C |
Understanding the Zener Principle
This component operates by maintaining a stable voltage across its terminals when biased in the reverse direction. By placing the diode in parallel with a load and using a series resistor, you create a “shunt regulator.” The diode will conduct current as soon as the voltage tries to climb above 4.3V, effectively “clamping” the signal or power rail at that level.
Application & Replacement Notes
-
Signal Clipping: If your circuit includes analog sensors or communication lines, this diode serves as a safety gate. It will pass signals below 4.3V untouched but will prevent any damaging high-voltage transients from reaching your processor or sensitive ICs.
-
Component Replacement: When replacing this part, you must source a 4.3V Zener diode with a 500mW rating in a DO-35 package.
-
Thermal Safety: Because this is a 500mW device, always ensure the circuit includes a series resistor to limit the current through the diode. If you omit the resistor, the diode will draw excessive current and fail (usually by shorting internally).
