Description
For a diode rated at 6A and 1000V, you are stepping into the category of high-current power rectifiers. Unlike the 1A or 3A versions, a 6A device requires more robust construction to handle both higher current loads and the associated heat dissipation.
The most common industrial standard for this rating is the 6A10.
Technical Specifications (6A10)
| Parameter | Rating |
| Average Rectified Forward Current ($I_O$) | 6.0 A |
| Peak Repetitive Reverse Voltage ($V_{RRM}$) | 1000 V |
| Non-Repetitive Peak Surge Current ($I_{FSM}$) | 400 A (8.3 ms) |
| Forward Voltage Drop ($V_F$) | ~1.0 V (at 6A) |
| Package Type | R-6 (Axial, thick leads) |
Key Considerations for 6A Diodes
-
Physical Size and Heat: Because the 6A10 is often used in high-current applications (like large battery chargers or heavy-duty power supplies), the package is physically large (R-6). The leads are thick to conduct heat away from the junction.
-
Mounting: It is crucial to provide adequate PCB copper area or keep the leads long enough to dissipate heat into the surrounding air. If the current is consistently at the 6A limit, the diode will get very hot, and proper thermal management is essential to prevent PCB damage or component failure.
-
Surge Protection: With a massive surge rating of 400A, this diode is extremely resilient against the high-inrush currents generated by large transformers or capacitive loads.
Important Design Notes
-
Rectification Type: Like the others we discussed, this is a standard recovery rectifier. It is designed for 50/60 Hz power line frequency. It will not function correctly in high-frequency switching circuits (like those found in modern laptop chargers or DC-DC converters).
-
Mounting Orientation: Because of the thermal load, these are often mounted vertically or with extra spacing from other heat-sensitive components (like electrolytic capacitors).
-
Polarity: As with all standard diodes, the banded end is the Cathode (-). Ensure this is oriented correctly, as a reversed diode at 6A could cause significant damage to your power supply stage.

| 1N4007 | 1A | DO-41 |
| 1N5408 | 3A | DO-201AD |
| 6A10 | 6A | R-6 |
