Description
The MBR20200 is a high-performance Schottky Barrier Diode featuring a “dual-diode” construction. It is highly regarded in power electronics for its extremely low forward voltage drop and rapid switching characteristics, which minimize power losses.
Technical Specifications
| Parameter | Rating |
| Peak Repetitive Reverse Voltage ($V_{RRM}$) | 200 V |
| Average Rectified Forward Current ($I_O$) | 20 A (Total, 10A per diode) |
| Forward Voltage Drop ($V_F$) | ~0.9 V (at 10A per leg) |
| Reverse Recovery Time ($t_{rr}$) | Negligible (Schottky) |
| Package Type | TO-220AB (Dual, Common Cathode) |
Key Features & Advantages
-
Schottky Barrier Technology: Unlike standard silicon diodes that rely on P-N junctions, Schottky diodes use a metal-semiconductor junction. This results in no reverse recovery time, making them essentially instantaneous in switching.
-
Low Forward Voltage ($V_F$): Schottky diodes typically have a much lower voltage drop compared to standard or “fast recovery” diodes. This directly translates to higher efficiency and less heat generation, which is critical when handling 20A of current.
-
Common Cathode Configuration: The MBR20200 contains two diodes sharing a common cathode (the metal mounting tab is usually connected to the cathode). This makes it perfect for center-tap rectifier circuits, where you can combine the two internal diodes to handle the full 20A current.
Design & Engineering Considerations
-
Heatsink Requirement: Even with Schottky efficiency, 20A of current will generate heat. The TO-220 package must be mounted to a heatsink. Because the metal tab is internally connected to the common cathode, you may need an insulating kit (mica washer and shoulder washer) if you need to keep the tab electrically isolated from your heatsink.
-
Reverse Leakage: A known characteristic of Schottky diodes is that they exhibit higher reverse leakage current than P-N junction diodes, especially as temperature increases. Ensure your circuit is designed to handle this, as excessive leakage can lead to “thermal runaway” if the diode is not properly cooled.
-
Voltage Margin: With a 200V rating, this is excellent for 24V or 48V power supply rails. Avoid using it in circuits where spikes might approach the 200V limit, as Schottky diodes are sensitive to overvoltage damage.
Typical Applications
-
Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS): Acting as the secondary rectifier to convert high-frequency pulses to stable DC.
-
Solar Panel Protection: Used as a bypass diode to prevent reverse current flow when panels are shaded.
-
Battery Charging: Ideal for low-voltage, high-current chargers where minimizing power loss (heat) is the primary design goal.
